Prepping for Storm Damage

9/26/2022 (Permalink)

It may not seem like it now, spring is right around the corner and while the weather can be absolutely beautiful, especially after the harsh winter months, spring can also bring damaging storms. These can include thunderstorms, damaging wind storms and even tornadoes. All can leave a path of destruction. Being prepared for these storms is important, as we all know Mother Nature is highly unpredictable. Here are some tips to help keep you prepared.

  • Thunderstorm winds can cause significant damage. As the storm approaches its a good idea to secure loose objects in the yard. Damage can occur when the wind throws the objects towards the home or vehicles. Stay inside though if the storm is already hitting and you don't have time to secure objects.
  • Another source of damage during thunderstorms is fallen tree branches. Make sure to trim dead or rotting branches near the home or any vehicles.
  • Hail is notorious for denting cars and weakening roofs and shingles. If you have time before the storm, make sure any vehicle is placed in a covered area. After a hail storm make sure no water is leaking through the roof. An accumulation of wind and hail can damage a roof over time and lead to leaks. When a roof needs replacement, consider a roof and shingles that better protect from wind and hail damage.
  • Tornadoes and damage they cause are the most difficult to prepare for. The winds are so extreme that destruction can be severe, even for well built homes. When a significant tornado approaches the most important thing to do is protect you and your family. During a tornado warning take shelter in the center most point of the lowest level and stay away from windows.
